Would a partially paralyzed person have control of his or her bowels?

Question by Solomon Kovač: Would a partially paralyzed person have control of his or her bowels?
There is this attractive young woman at my job who can only use her left arm and can barely use her right arm. I know she is single and I've been wanting to ask her out. Being the shallow jerk that I am, I was wondering is she has any control of herself in this way. She is not very strong and I don't know if she can move into and out of her electric wheelchair by herself. Do you think she has to wear some kind of adult diaper or catheter?

It depends on the extent of the paralysis. If the paralysis of the legs is complete then it is likely that there is no control of bowel or bladder either. On the other hand, I am visiting a lady who still has some movement in the legs and still has control.
As for your young lady, if you enjoy each other's company, why not ask her out anyway?

  1. I agree with the above statement. Bowel and urine continence is controlled by nerves in the lumbar and sacral spinal area. Any spinal paralysis above that level can result in incontinence, but what you are describing may not be a spinal problem. There are other nerve diseases that can produce similar problems. Why not befriend her first? She may not be comfortable talking about her condition with someone she is not completely comfortable with. Maybe you can find out if her condition has a name. Then you can research it on line before bringing it up to her. Go slow, but go! Good luck to both of you.

  2. It depends on her disabilty and paralysis. However, it shouldn't matter.
