  3. Make the braking system based upon hydraulics and have the control for it mechanical. That's how cars do it, right? :-) (Just don't let anyone mess with your brake lines. I'd hope a modern car would throw an error if it sensed it couldn't pressurize the brake system, but I'm not big into automotive electronics.)

  4. I was thinking maybe it would be safer to have the mosfets and controller in the right armrest, but then I got to thinking about drive by wire cars and how most modern cars do that.... Hah. I guess at 12mph you want to have safer controls than at 70mph. :-D

  5. 1:10.. I don't think that really counts.. What about your car? Doesn't it do the exact same thing when you're starting to drive?

  9. The hall effect sensor for the joysticks surprised me! We're actually only just getting into these with RC model controllers, where you'd think they'd use the most reliable thing available - but most manufacturers opt for cheap pots ;)

  14. why there is that connector is so a different seat can be easily fitted by the dealer and also custom controls fitted without too much faffing around getting a base custom built.

No - It had a custom marking with the controller manufacturer's initials.

Just spotted that when flipping through the manual (most of which comprises warnings!). The manual is available on the maufacturer's website.

  20. Some of them have a cable to the transmission that disengages it and the brakes. Possible that cable got tangled somehow and thus 'pulled' (if it goes slack it locks).. a potential risk factor I hadn't thought of, will have to bear this in mind!

  21. I think some chairs do that, but probably not the small basic model Mike had there. The brake problem doesn't occur, they're failsafe, if the battery goes, the brake goes on, and if you let go of the joystick, the brake goes on also. And [at least on my girlfriend's one] the brake doesn't go on fully immediately so if it IS rolling away, it won't tip over with the brake coming on suddenly.

  22. Oh and indeed the charge DOES completely disable the chair itself :-)

  23. In case you're interested Mike, and don't have the original instructions, there's a "lock" mode on those controllers. You Turn the power on, [i THINK you then hold the power button till it beeps], then slam the joystick full forward till it beeps, then full back till it beeps twice, then it's locked. Same procedure to unlock :-)

  24. bit surprised this wasn't the usual 1st of April joke (that would be boring :P).
But nice stuff anyhow. You seem to pick up loads of those really interesting and odd at the same time devices.
    Thumbs up !
