What does the zig-zag line across a note mean in sheet music?

Question by Matthew Blomquist: What does the zig-zag line across a note mean in sheet music?
I working on electric wheelchair on tenors and the is a note the has a sideways zig-zag though it what does it mean??

Zigzags that I'm used to mean "trill" -- a rapid oscillation of two notes (like C/D, C/E, C/C#).
