Does it bother you when obese people use the electric wheelchair/shopping carts provided by supermarkets?

Question by Independent Ollie: Does it bother you when obese people use the electric wheelchair/shopping carts provided by supermarkets?
I used to see older people that had a hard time walking using them but now I only see people of rotund proportions that are just too lazy to walk using them and it really bothers me. What about you?

Best answer:

Answer by Amy
well I think that they have a great difficulty getting around without the chair....even though they could use the exercise.
My aunt is one of those people and I used to think it was just dumb, but one time I saw how hard it was for her without the chair and I understood....

I think those electric wheelchairs would make good commuting transport?

Question by pete the pirate: I think those electric wheelchairs would make good commuting transport?
They have a range of about 30km. They could be charged up during the day at work. If powered by nuclear, solar, or hydro power there would be a great reduction in greenhouse gas as freeway fulls of cars would not be needed on the daily commute. I realise they would need minor adaptions for weather. What do others think?

With more car makers creating hybrids, why don't they create a van hybrid?

Question by kath68142: With more car makers creating hybrids, why don't they create a van hybrid?
I have to drive a van because I carry around a 350-pound electric wheelchair and lift. It would be nice to have a hybrid van, though.

Best answer:

Answer by thebandgeek3
It would be tough because usually hybrids are on smaller cars, you know, less weight. As technology *hopefully* progresses I see a hybrid van in the relativly near future like 2010ish.

My mother-in-law is in a wheelchair and we'd like to have her over to our house for dinner. The problem is, we live in a raised ranch. There are 6 steps inside (about 4 feet of rise) to the dining room. We only have about 9 feet of room for a ramp. Any suggestions?

What is the best route to take for wrongful death in Virginia?

Question by Kevin: What is the best route to take for wrongful death in Virginia?
My mother in law called 911 Christmas Day for her husband. He was running a fever, and was very weak. He had fallen twice within 24 hours and bumped his head. (He tried to get to his wheelchair without asking for help.) He was transported to ER, and diagnosed with Pneumonia. He is a bad diabetic, has a prosthetic leg, and very limited vision. His wife was certain he would be admitted to hospital. The hospital was ready to release him within an hour. His wife told the Doctor he wasn't well, and was talking out of his head, along with still having the fever.
The Doctor said he couldn't keep him because he had dialysis the following day. She asked if they could at least transfer him to get him needed help. The Doctor said "He'll be fine, I am giving him strong antibiotics." She could clearly see that the staff was in the middle of their Christmas Party, and her husbands presence was very inconvienent.
They needed to even help her get him in the car at the hospital, because the ambulance didn't take his leg with him. Back at home, within 3 hours, he told his wife he needed to go to bathroom. But his motor skills were so impaired, he couldn't steer the electric scooter he was in. While trying to get him to bathroom, he slumped over, and was drooling from his mouth. She called 911 again, they actually sent a helicopter to transport him. But the medics had to get his heartbeat stabilized first. He had went into full cardiac arrest at home. Once he got back to the same hospital, they got his heartbeat regulated. The same Dr was in the ER and stated "as soon as I heard the call, I knew I should have kept him. I'll be kicking myself for this for a while."
They then transported him to a much bigger and better hospital. He was on total life support until the family decoded to putt the plug on New Year's Eve.
Every doctor we talked to in the "better" hospital said the reason he went into full cardiac arrest was due to the pneumonia. The better hospital also told us he had the flu as well. So the doctor that sent him home originally, had sent him home with a death sentence.
Would the hospital come to a decent settlement without involving an attorney? I don't know if there is a minimum settlement amount for cases like this. I know of other people that have gotten (from what I hear) close to one million in a settlement.
If this is the case, if she got close to a million, she'd be better off that 1.5 with an attorney because of their fees. Any and all info, suggestions, and tips are greatly appreciated.

What's the difference between an electric powered wheelchair and a manual wheelchair?

Question by Nancy PDQ: What's the difference between an electric powered wheelchair and a manual wheelchair?
Besides having a motor, what are the other major differences between a self-propelled wheelchair and a power chair that is powered by a battery?

Best answer:

Answer by hey!
Typically, electric wheelchairs are heavier while manual wheelchairs are lighter. A manual wheelchair helps an individual maintain upper body strength b/c they propel themselves by using their hands & arms. However, electric wheelchairs seem to provider greater freedom to get around. I live in a city & notice more electric wheelchairs bee-bopping down the sidewalks than I do manual wheelchairs.

How much does an electric wheelchair cost?

Question by Molly: How much does an electric wheelchair cost?
OK, so i am planning to surprise my mom in a big way. She is disabled, and i really really really want to buy her an electric wheelchair. My mom and dad are going to get a divorce, so i don't think he cares enough to buy one for her. So that is why i am going to. The thing is, i don't know how much they cost. How much do they cost????
PS: I'm sorry if this is in the wrong catagory, but i didn't know what to put it in.

Best answer:

Answer by S P
Depends on what she needs. You need to take her to a qualified wheelchair sales and repair company. They can then measure and tell you what would be best. If she has insurance, then they will also help pay for it, if not pay it all.

What do you think? Answer below!

Is it proper to keep telling a person they should get an electric wheelchair?

Question by catgrl: Is it proper to keep telling a person they should get an electric wheelchair?
Some people act like it is such a chore to push me in the manual chair so they want me to get an electric one. I know it is difficult, but some like pushing me, despite the hard work, so I don't think I need one. I also have problems keeping my balance in those when they stop.

Best answer:

Answer by DS
It is fair enough for you to think about the issue selfishly - it is mainly you it affects, so you should decide what kind of wheelchair to have. However, as well as taking into account your physical comfort, I guess you should take into account how it affects your relationship with other people: making others happy ultimately benefits you.

Anyway, to answer your question, I don't think what is 'proper' comes into it. You have to deal with people as they are.

Section 8 is awful. Don't do it. You are only surrounded by people solely dependent on the government. Those places attract crime.
Please don't use the police power of government to steal from your neighbors in order to pay for a family member's housing. Pay for it yourself.

How much torque do I need?

Question by JWD: How much torque do I need?
Wanting to build an electric wheelchair. How much torque do I need in order to move 400 pounds?

Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by Sassafras
You haven't provided enough enformation to provide an adequate answer. On a smooth flat surface with very good bearings and wheels 1 foot*lb could "move" 400 pounds, but it would accelerate very slowly.

On a more practical level you might consider the steepest grade you want to have the wheel chair negotiate. For example to climb a 10 degree slope you could calculate required torque like this:

Assume:
wheel diameter = 2 feet
Frictional losses are minimal
Acceleration at maximum slope is not needed

Calculate minumum force to climb 10 degrees with 400 pounds:
F = 400 sin 10 = 69.5 lb

Now calculate the torque required on the wheel to get that force at the tire:

T = F*r = 69.5 lb * 1 foot = 69.5 ft*lb

So you would need a minimum of 69.5 ft*lb of torque to move 400 pounds up a slope of 10 degrees. I hope this helps.

Can an electric wheelchair hydroplane when it is raining?

Question by Live_Love_Laugh: Can an electric wheelchair hydroplane when it is raining?
Is it possible with the friction from the tires or would they have to have a faster velocity like the speed of a car?

Best answer:

Answer by mustanger
I don't think an electric wheel chair will get up enough speed to hydroplane. You can hydroplane at pretty low speeds on bald tires but you still need more speed than a wheel chair will achieve.

is there any way I can make a mobile robot out of a large cage?

Question by teeteringtimetraveller: is there any way I can make a mobile robot out of a large cage?
assuming that I am working with one of the cages or aviaries provided in the links down below, is it possible to add locomotion to these cages by incorporating wheels, motor drives, casters, etc? Is it also possible to have these cages run autonomously like a motorized or electric wheelchair? I know the horizontal center of balance & vertical center of gravity will be important variables to consider as well as the weight. If this project isn't feasible, then is there a way I can use these cages as an enclosure for my go-kart by attaching or welding them on the go-kart? I assume that would be easier?

electric wheelchair after owner has passed away?

Question by Kayln: electric wheelchair after owner has passed away?
my grandmother has passed away two days ago and we are all trying to go through her house and decide what to do with items. she has a $ 10,000 electric wheelchair and we are not sure what we are supposed to do. this is all very new to us. we do not have a number for the company. do we donate or return it? does anyone know or been through this?

thanks so so much

Best answer:

Answer by MyThoughts
First, let me say - I'm so sorry for the loss of your grandmother.

I would suggest you go through all of your grandmother's paperwork to find any info on the wheelchair. Sometimes Medicaid/Medicare will pay RENT for items that may be used temporarily, so giving the chair away could be a problem. If you find out the chair has been paid for in full, I would suggest contacting a retirement home to see if someone there could benefit from it.
The Little Sisters of the Poor have facilities all over the U.S. and their vocation in life is to care for the elderly poor - you can find the address of the one nearest you by googling "Little Sisters of the Poor, residences" They would be incredibly grateful to have such a nice chair for one of their needy residents.

Good luck and take care.

Can you ride a child on a scooter at Disney World if you rent it outside the park?

Question by Shari S: Can you ride a child on a scooter at Disney World if you rent it outside the park?
I understand the safety policy of not riding a child on one of Disneys Electric Carts, but they take it too far when you are sitting perfectly still and a four year old just sits on it with you while not moving. What about if you rent from a company and have it delivered to DW and then put your child on it? Will they get angry about that? And yes, the woman was very rude about it to us.

Best answer:

Answer by pattypuff76
No. We will not get angry about that--as long as the 4-year-old is not the one who's steering/driving. If that happens, someone will say something to you about that.

I apologize that someone was rude to you in regard to the safety issue of having a child on the scooter with you. Another issue with those ECV's--in regard the child sitting on it with you when it's stationary--is that they can only hold a certain amount of weight. If you go over the weight limit by riding more than on person on it--or sitting with another on it--it could break. The ECV's that WDW rents out come from an outside source. They do not belong to Disney. That's another reason why cast members are so sensitive about the "rules" regarding them.

Remember, also, when you're riding a scooter that was rented from an off-property source--and you've piled more than one person onto it--that if it breaks, Disney will not offer you a replacement scooter because it was not rented at the park. They will get you a wheelchair and help you get a replacement from the outside company.

Is it just me who gets really angry at obese people?

Question by Chrissy_NOMNOM: Is it just me who gets really angry at obese people?
I always feel so annoyed (if they have no medical condition that made them obese), they clog up the health system and hospitals, all because more food goes in, than comes out!
Is it really so difficult to eat healthily and exercise?

And the whole 'I can't walk because I'm fat, so I will use electric wheelchairs.'
Somehow that doesn't make sense to me..

Is this just me being out of order, or do people agree with me?

I have a business trip in Europe.
Please introduce me some famous and global “Electric wheelchair and scooter magazine” in Europe or in Germany. Or some Rehab magazine about “Electric wheelchair and scooter”
And please tell me where can I buy the magazine.

Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by gentlesoul
I did a little search and a magazine called 'Slate' was mentioned. Seems like there's a lot of people selling--it would be easy to get a bunch of catalogs. Also there are some articles in other magazines, probably for elderly or handicapped. Just do some more research. Probably can subscribe through the Internet too, or find an 800 number.
Don't forget the public library--ask the librarian to help you find articles.

How to cope with my dad's death from brain cancer?

Question by Mark: How to cope with my dad's death from brain cancer?
My father began slurring his words in late July of 2012, and in August he want to the ER at my urging and was given a CT scan, followed by an MRI, and was eventually diagnosed with brain cancer.

He had debulking surgery, and afterwards the biopsy confirmed it was glioblastoma MF - the deadliest form of brain cancer.

He was always so athletic and healthy because his parents both died young, and it broke my heart to see him slowly succumb to the cancer. He did radiation, chemotherapy, dexamethasone and, after it quickly returned in November, Avastin.

By late-November he was becoming paralyzed in his right side. He still wanted to swim everyday, so either my sister or I would take him to a nearby pool where there were no people. He used to be such a strong swimmer - swam two miles a day the previous 20 years - and soon he could barely stay afloat. But he kept trying. And he purchased books on positive visualization, and it was so awful seeing my poor father in bed with his reading glasses trying to practice the "visualization" techniques.

Soon his speech was so garbled we could barely understand him, and by December his personality had changed and he was cranky all the time and completely physically handicapped.

Seeing my father try to move an electric wheelchair through our home with his one "good" hand was more than I could bare, particularly because I knew the diagnosis was terminal. But I did my best to say positive things around him like "You can beat this, Dad" and "There are plenty of long term survivors, of course you can live to see your grandchildren."

By Christmas he was incontinent and constantly peeing the bed, so we had to have him wear diapers, which I knew he hated, but he had no choice.

On January 16th, he suddenly started experiencing extreme pain when we tried to move him from his wheelchair to the bed. His appetite, which had been strong throughout the whole ordeal, suddenly disappeared.

Within two days he was in bed, sleeping 22 hours a day. It was hard to rouse him. And by January 19th, he was falling into a coma. We thought he was unconscious for a whole day, but out of nowhere he made his last intentional effort - he put his arm around me as I lay next to him crying. That was the last time he ever did or said anything.

With the help of hospice we kept him at home and gave him liquid medications as opposed to sending him to the hospital to die - he hated the hospital. The "death rattle" started on January 21st, and soon after he was foaming at the mouth and bleeding from his nose. I almost lost my sanity watching him literally drown in his own fluids. Around 2am on January 22nd, he took his last breath.

I skipped the first week of school to be with my dad, after having been home for all 4 weeks of my xmas break. Today I have class for the first time since December, and I don't know how I'm going to handle it. I feel so sad, so angry, so horrified I had to watch my healthy father die so young. He was so good to me, and I wish i could have done something to help him. I keep picturing how scared he was, how often he would cry, how he's never coming back and i'll never see him again.

If anyone has had any similar experience, it would make me feel so much better to hear your story.

Best answer:

Answer by br549
Hearing my story won't ease anything. You know that! Many have experienced what you went through. As painful as it is, it is part of life.

You can take comfort in the fact that your dad is no longer suffering, and that you were able to help ease his passage. You can also realize that even in his worst state, he was very proud of you.

The best thing to remember is there are more good memories of your dad than bad. No one can EVER take that away.

It's been over 20 years. I still miss my dad!

If I take my family to a Disney resort in Fl, would it be wise not to rent a car?

Question by debeyhaber: If I take my family to a Disney resort in Fl, would it be wise not to rent a car?
I know there are Disney World buses that take you from the resorts to the parks. Are there buses that take you, for instance, to Universal or Downtown Orlando? I want to take my electric wheelchair with me, that's why I ask. Thanks.

Best answer:

Answer by nurserachet_0000
You won't need a car in the resort. The buses deal with wheelchairs all day long. They are awsome at it. Now about going to universal and downtown, you might want a car or perhaps just take a cab.
