What's the difference between an electric powered wheelchair and a manual wheelchair?

Question by Nancy PDQ: What's the difference between an electric powered wheelchair and a manual wheelchair?
Besides having a motor, what are the other major differences between a self-propelled wheelchair and a power chair that is powered by a battery?

Typically, electric wheelchairs are heavier while manual wheelchairs are lighter. A manual wheelchair helps an individual maintain upper body strength b/c they propel themselves by using their hands & arms. However, electric wheelchairs seem to provider greater freedom to get around. I live in a city & notice more electric wheelchairs bee-bopping down the sidewalks than I do manual wheelchairs.

  1. Manual Wheelchairs as the name implies are used manually or pushed around while electric powere wheelchairs are those powered by electricity and can move with a push of a button.

  2. Power wheelchairs are generally for people who are unable to propel themselves for long distances. They provide the freedom to go out and enjoy your life without the fear of loss of breath, fatigue, etc.
Power wheelchairs can sometimes be more difficult to travel with, however they do make travel power wheelchairs which have lighter frames and there are auto lifts that can be mounted on your vehicle for simple transport. With a power wheelchair you are also dependent on your batteries being charged for continued mobility. It is best that these batteries are charged at least once a week, even when the chair is not in use, to maintain the life of the batteries.

If you are able to propel yourself for long distances without worry of fatigue or loss of breath then your best bet would be to use a manual wheelchair. The manual wheelchair allows you to continue to get exercise even while seated in the chair. As my doctor always says "Use It or Lose It." They are also much easier to travel with because they are a great deal lighter and take up much less room in your vehicle because they fold and do not have motors.
