There are no code required features, like there are for the disabled, however I would limit the number of stairs and install grab bars in the tub/shower and by the toilet.

Minimize the use of stairs. For example, you wouldn't want multiple stories or stairs accessing the home if you can avoid it. If you do have a two story home, you can get an electric lifting chair installed to help people up and down the stairs. Something like a sunken living room would require a step down and up to access, so you should avoid it. Doorways should be wide, like for handicapped access, in case the person ends up with a walker or wheelchair. There should be plenty of sturdy hand rails for any place that does step up or down. And, you should have handrails installed in the bathrooms, both in the shower and tub, and by the toilet. Also consider one of those walk-in bath tubs. These can be a few thousand dollars. But, it allows the elderly to open the side of the tub and just walk in, instead of having to step over the side (which can be very dangerous).
