  1. It all depends on what you need one for.

Wheelchairs are great but a whole lot heavier when electric. Mobility scooters are too but can't be toted around easily without a liftgate on a car, truck or van.

Both can be all-terrain, going over grass, uneven ground, etc.

Most insurances cover both. Talk over your options with your doctor too.

  2. As belle said, it depends what are your needs. If you are someone who pretty much needs it just for long distance, you can walk short distances and transfer yourself, if you have no postural control issues or skin breakdown, then a scooter should be fine (typically much less expensive than a wheelchair). In contrast, an electric wheelchair typically is more compact (base width and length) for sharper turns within a home, can be accomodated with specialized seating equipment if you have postural control or skin breakdown issues, but is typically much more expensive and heavy. An electric wheelchair is really made for someone who cannot walk any distance independently and spends most of the day on the equipment (such as someone with a spinal cord injury). A scooter is more appopriate for someone who really just cannot walk long distances such as someone with degenerative joint disease.
