wheelchair bound & can't get out of my bldg, need suggestions.?

Question by Sarge: wheelchair bound & can't get out of my bldg, need suggestions.?
Have electric wheelchair with three huge steps in front of bldg. super refuses to give me the key to leave via the basement ramp and owners refuse to build ramp because the bldg is old enough not to be required. Am totally dependant upon roommate to help but he's not always there.

Do you have a lease? Were you in the wheelchair when you rented? need more info...
But the landlord has to provide for his tenants..that's discrimination..consult an attorney, it's a free consoltation...doesn't hurt.

  1. Call your municipality office or City Hall and if you live in Canada, I'm sure that something can be done about this as there is a push on to make more buildings accessable for disabled people and you should certainly be able to get in and out of your apartment. What happens if there is a fire?? Maybe call the fire department and see what they can do. Good luck don't give up demand your rights to proper access.

  2. You need to call the local city which you live in, and most likely they will have a code enforcement office which you can ask if there are local building codes being violated due to the lack of ramps in your building.

  3. That it ILLEGAL! Call your local Housing authority and get some action. I'm not sure where you live, but here you need to have handicap accessible bldgs, walkway and everything

  4. Hi Sarge, its me again (the one you have helped with the holiday/insurance). My husband asks why you are not allowed a key? He suggests that if he is adamant that you cant have one and will not build a ramp you can contact your local social services or occupational therapist and they may be able to obtain a grant to pay for the ramp.

Dont think you are the same sarge?
